The Eco-Challenge at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the percentage of environmental scientists and ecologists is steadily growing. Part of the reason could easily be the increasing number of botanical gardens around the world and the number of activities for children inside of them. Carlynton School District is lucky to have a garden less than 20 minutes from its community. Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens was constructed in 1893 as a gift to the city of Pittsburgh. Including this year, and five years prior, our local conservatory has hosted a middle school and high school event called the Eco-Challenge. This educational event teaches of the different works and wonders an environmental scientist can do to make real and positive change in the world. This year approximately 25 students in grades 6, 7, and 8 in the Gifted and Enrichment program attended the Eco Challenge at Phipps on September 12, 2019. Next to Phipps is a school-sized building powered entirely by solar power. In t

Carlynton Middle School Football

On September 19th, the Carlynton Cougars played Keystone Oaks’ Golden Eagles. This game was one of the early games in the season. The score in the first quarter was 0-14 and 0-30 in the second quarter; however, in the third quarter the Carlynton Cougars got their first touchdown, making the score 6-30 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw another touchdown, bringing the final score to 14-30. One of the Cougars remarked that they’d also lost to K.O. during their pre-season scrimmage, but they hope to improve over the season.  Next game for the Middle School Cougars is 9/26. Anna Hall, 8th grade

Girls Varsity Soccer: Bethlehem Center vs. Carlynton (at Honus Wagner on 09/16/2019) On  Monday, September 16, I got to watch your Carlynton Girls Varsity soccer team, coached by Andy Bogats, earn a huge win against a non-section team, Bethlehem Center. The first half of the game seemed to play out very simply with no score from either team, although the teams fought hard for it. Your Cougars played a strong defense as Senior Captains, Anya Carrasco and Olivia Robb, worked with Kira Hill (Junior), and Audrey Robb (Sophomore), to help keeper, Sara Macmurdo (Junior), who prevented Bethlehem Center from scoring.  It seemed as though the girls’ half-time break invoked a sense of determination, as they scored 2 goals in the second half of the game. The first goal of the game was scored by  Freshman, Mikayla Walker, with a set shot from out past the eighteen; the second and final goal of the night was scored by Senior Captain, Savannah Sevacko, as she ensured another vict
