Girls Varsity Soccer: Bethlehem Center vs. Carlynton (at Honus Wagner on 09/16/2019)

On  Monday, September 16, I got to watch your Carlynton Girls Varsity soccer team,
coached by Andy Bogats, earn a huge win against a non-section team, Bethlehem Center.
The first half of the game seemed to play out very simply with no score from either team,
although the teams fought hard for it.

Your Cougars played a strong defense as Senior Captains, Anya Carrasco and Olivia Robb,
worked with Kira Hill (Junior), and Audrey Robb (Sophomore), to help keeper,
Sara Macmurdo (Junior), who prevented Bethlehem Center from scoring.

It seemed as though the girls’ half-time break invoked a sense of determination, as they
scored 2 goals in the second half of the game. The first goal of the game was scored by
Freshman, Mikayla Walker, with a set shot from out past the eighteen; the second and
final goal of the night was scored by Senior Captain, Savannah Sevacko, as she ensured
another victory for your Lady Cougars.

Way to go, Ladies!  We’re excited for the rest of the season!

CIS Chemistry Field Trip

On December 11, the 11th grade CIS (College In High School) Chemistry class went to Robert Morris University to survey the campus and conduct experiments in the Science Wing.  During the experiment, students mixed various liquids to determine their concentrations and potency, as well as how the liquids reflect blue light. As they measured the liquids, the students learned how to use different measurement tools, such as a “ repeater pipette”. The repeater pipette allows one to measure a certain amount of liquid by turning the dial to the desired number, then pressing the button until all of the liquid is inside the repeater pipette.  Afterwards, the button is pressed again to release the liquid. Since the CIS Chemistry students are currently  working on their midterm in the lab, one student stated, “It was a nice change of pace to try a different experiment, since we’ve been focused on getting the results we need back at Carlynton.”  I hope that t...

Advice from a Senior: Study Tips

Now that midterms are over and we are all beginning to see our grades, we have had time to reflect on what study methods worked and what did not. This article compiles several study methods I have found successful throughout high school, and especially this year. Step 1: Determine What You Need to Study, AKA Prioritize It would be counterproductive to study topics you already know; therefore, it is necessary to prioritize what you understand least. Determining what you do not know is a vital part of studying. I find the most successful way to determine what you do not know is by attempting to complete a study guide or practice test without looking up questions. If the teacher did not provide any of these materials, you may try to redoing questions from your notes or worksheets you have already done. Occasionally, you may benefit from solving questions in the textbook or from online. It is common to do poorly on this initial assessment, but by observing what questions you get w...

The Fall Play presents The Match Game!

Last Friday, Carlynton’s annual Match Game was held to support the fall play, Our Town .  In the Match Game, the fall play cast dresses up as various characters , from movie stars to YouTube sensations.  The first round's MCs were the Sanderson Sisters, played by Marco Moorby, Hayley Kerns, and Jaimee Cabili, who began with a choreographed song and dance number. The Game consists of two rounds and two teams each, pitting cast members against one another in a battle of points; the team with the most points in the end  wins.  However, the winning team is more to the benefit of the audience; at the beginning of each round, an audience member is chosen for each team to compete and possibly win fall play tickets.  To win the tickets, the chosen audience members answer fill-in-the-blank questions presented to their team; the goal is to write an answer that matches one of the team member’s answers. If the answers match (hence the name “Match Game”), the te...
