The Fall Play presents The Match Game!

Last Friday, Carlynton’s annual Match Game was held to support the fall play, Our Town.  In the Match Game, the fall play cast dresses up as various characters, from movie stars to YouTube sensations.  The first round's MCs were the Sanderson Sisters, played by Marco Moorby, Hayley Kerns, and Jaimee Cabili, who began with a choreographed song and dance number.

The Game consists of two rounds and two teams each, pitting cast members against one another in a battle of points; the team with the most points in the end wins.  However, the winning team is more to the benefit of the audience; at the beginning of each round, an audience member is chosen for each team to compete and possibly win fall play tickets.

To win the tickets, the chosen audience members answer fill-in-the-blank questions presented to their team; the goal is to write an answer that matches one of the team member’s answers. If the answers match (hence the name “Match Game”), the team receives a point.  For example, a question presented to the teams was “Carlynton has a new (motto): Community, Character, _______.” In response to the prompt, an audience member wrote “Bananas” to match with a cast member portraying Donkey Kong. Because they both wrote the same answer, the respective team won a point.

In the second round, audience members got a kick out of cast members portraying teachers from
Carlynton, such as Ms. Begg, Mr. Palonis, Mrs. Fischer, and Ms. Nocera.  Kyle Auth impersonanted Mr. Kozy as the MC for Round Two. Daniel Badger, Mrs. Badger’s son, imitated his mother by sporting her trademark lab coat, bun, and various test tubes.

Ms. Enck, portrayed by Elana Heffner, received an “autograph” from William Shakespeare, someone the real Ms. Enck vocally admires. Evan Walker, the cast member behind William Shakespeare, spoke exclusively in improvised rhymes and witty puns, causing the audience to burst out in laughter on numerous occasions.
Also, students in the audience chuckled at the interactions between Mr. Kozy and Mr. Stagl, longtime friends who are often seen hanging out in the hallway.  At the end of the round, all of the cast members who took part in the Match Game gathered on the stage for a group photo. We’re looking forward to seeing the cast in Our Town, which runs from December 4-8.

Our Town: A Review

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending Carlynton's Fall Play “Our Town. ” The play followed events taking place in Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire,  mainly focusing on the lives of the Webb and Gibbs families.  The first act, titled “Daily Life,” opened with Stage Manager, Camryn Kwiatkoski, walking from the audience and up onto the stage to open the show. She gave insight into the daily lives of people in the town, calling characters such as Mr. Webb (Zachary Holderbaum ) and Professor Willard ( Zavier Helbig) to give accounts on the population, history, and typical events in Grover’s Corner. Characters such as Doc Gibbs (Reece Smith)  were also placed in the audience and would interject with questions for the Stage Manager and commentary on life in the town. The act allowed for the fourth wall to be  broken , giving a unique, interesting opening to the show. The act then showed a typical day in Grover’s Corners, giving viewers a basic ...

Homecoming Dance

Homecoming is something many people look forward to during their high school years. For the Sophomores, it's one of the first traditional dances they’re invited to. For Juniors, it's a celebration of growing up, a right of passage. And for Seniors, it's one of the last big dances they attend before graduation, and a chance to run for Homecoming King or Queen. Homecoming court always creates a stir among students, be it underclassmen wondering which running seniors will win titles, or hopeful voters eager to see if their favorite candidate will be crowned King or Queen.  This year, however, Homecoming elections sparked a very different conversation among students. Initially scheduled for  Friday's pep rally, the heavily anticipated  announcements of King and Queen were postponed until the Homecoming football game at the last minute. Mr. Loughren teased students on stage with an envelope holding the King and Queen winners, building suspense before announcing...

The Eco-Challenge at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the percentage of environmental scientists and ecologists is steadily growing. Part of the reason could easily be the increasing number of botanical gardens around the world and the number of activities for children inside of them. Carlynton School District is lucky to have a garden less than 20 minutes from its community. Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens was constructed in 1893 as a gift to the city of Pittsburgh. Including this year, and five years prior, our local conservatory has hosted a middle school and high school event called the Eco-Challenge. This educational event teaches of the different works and wonders an environmental scientist can do to make real and positive change in the world. This year approximately 25 students in grades 6, 7, and 8 in the Gifted and Enrichment program attended the Eco Challenge at Phipps on September 12, 2019. Next to Phipps is a school-sized building powered entirely by solar power. In t...
